Our Great Adventures ferry experience
Our Great Adventures ferry and boarding experience was very relaxed. Great Adventures passengers check in at its counter inside the Reef Fleet Terminal before boarding the ferry.
Tea, coffee and biscuits were available on our crossing, which was a pleasant start to the trip. The journey takes about 45 minutes in normal conditions, although weather and sea conditions can affect the crossing.
Because we stayed overnight, we did not have to organise all our activities around a single return ferry. Day visitors should pay close attention to both their outward and return times, as these determine how long they actually have on Green Island.
Is the Green Island glass-bottom boat worth it?
Yes. Based on our experience, the glass-bottom boat is worth including, particularly for families, non-swimmers and anyone visiting the Great Barrier Reef for the first time.
The commentary was insightful and educational without being difficult for the children to follow. We saw large fish, schools of fish, giant clams, turtles and starfish. Some of these were easier to see from the boat than they might have been while snorkelling close to the beach.
Our children loved the trip. It was also a good way for everyone to experience the reef together, regardless of swimming ability.
